Suggested Listening
I'll list some of my favorite odd and non-Top-10-albums, most of which I've picked up for free or at bargain prices only to be pleasantly
surprised.
- Malo, Evolution (Warner Brothers BS 2702, 1973)
[one band member was Jorge Santana i.e. Carl's kid brother]
- Jack Bonus, Jack Bonus (GRUNT FTR-1005, 1972)
[I had never heard of Jack Bonus before I picked up this album (it has the best cover I've ever seen) - and I was unable to find any information for the next 25 years, until visitors to this page
told me...
Jack Bonus sounds like a cross between Tom Waits and Dan Hicks.]
- Ruben & The Jets, For Real (Mercury 6338 205, 1973)
[this is the ultimate In-Love-Album - roll over and die Rod Stewart and Julio Iglesias both. Not to be confused with the Mothers '68 album
Crusin' With Ruben & The Jets. But it is produced by Dr. Zappa - and
Ruben & the boys also participated individually on many different Mothers' albums]
- Paul McCartney & Wings, Wild Life (Apple EMI PCS 7142, 1971)
[most downrated/overlooked album by a megastar ...if it weren't, believe me I wouldn't list it here - e.g. listen to 'Love is Strange' in RA ;) ]
- Flaco Jimenez, Flaco's Amigos (Cooking Vinyl 017, 1989)
[Listening to Flaco's lovesick conjunto I understand, why even humans can howl at the moon.... and he makes me wanna dance the polka! =:) ]
- Doug Sahm (1941-1999), Groover's Paradise (Warner Brothers BS 2810, 1974)
[I was a Creedence Clearwater Revival fan and found Doug Sahm, and then Flaco Jimenez, when CCR broke up and Stu Cook and Doug Clifford did this groovin' lovin' TexMex album with Doug Sahm]
- Legend, Legend (Vertigo 6360 019, 1970)
[I had never heard of Legend before I found this album, so if you know anything about them please contact me] ... here's what another friendly
visitor was able to tell me.
- Link Wray, Walkin' With Link (Epic / Sony EK 47904, 1992) [57-63 material] and the all-vocal Indian Child (Epic/Sony EPC 473100 2 - Denmark, 1993)
[Link has been residing here in Denmark for the past 25 years, and he's still ramblin' on both continents]
- Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, Last Train To Hicksville - The Home of Happy Feet (Blue Thumb/MCA LP, Cassette, MCA Compact Disk MCAD-31188 1973)
- Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948-1997)
- John Oswald, Plunderphonic (comes free on a tape - or you may download it in both wave and MP3 format)
[John Oswald is the ultimate re-mix artist] Here's a short sample (193K) from Plexure - 'plundered are over a thousand pop stars'.
